MAINTENANCE ART

  • How did you feel performing Maintenance Art in the area around the USU?
    • At first, I felt a little bit embarrassed from strangers that they gave us a look of what they were doing here. Besides the emotions, the sculpture was really enourmous and big, never expected it was this big.
  • How are Mierle Laderman Ukeles cleaning the steps of an art museum and Richard Serra flinging molten lead against the walls of an art museum different? How are they the same? Are one or both “art”? Are one or both “not art”?
    • In my opinion, Miele Laderman Ukeles behaviours is more like a normal action that people can do in dailylife, on the other hand, Richard Serra’s action requires more technique and instrucment to finish it. Moreover, both of them count as art to me since both of their action have a intentions behind it. Although cleaning is not regard as art to a lot of people, yet everything has a deeper meaning and intentions behind it count as art to me.
  • Was Mierle Laderman Ukeles’ Maintenance Art performance at the Wadsworth Atheneum “art”? Did the fact that her performance was at an Art Museum make it art? What if instead, she had simply gotten hired as a janitor at a factory somewhere and performed that job for 6 months? Would that have been art? What makes an act “art” or “not art”?
    • Mierle Laderman Ukeles’s maintenance is considered art as it perfromed a deeper meaning behind it. To be honest, ofcourse the fact that she performed the maintence at Art Museum made it more like a art action, but the meaning behind it, the meaning of cleaning creates something beautiful, is the real reason of it considered as art. If she got hired as a janitor and performed for 6 months, the action she took still considered as art since she has intention behind the cleaning. To me, anything can be art as long as it has deeper meaning, something that express an idea can be art.
  • Is an object or an action Art or Not Art because of some intrinsic property of the medium? Or because of the intention of the person performing it? Are all paintings on canvas art because paintings on canvas are exhibited in art museums? Is all house painting not art because we don’t exhibit painted houses in art museums? Can a painting on canvas ever be not art? Can painting a house ever be art?
    • Anything can be considered as art no matter what medium is being used. The location of where the art present isn’t important when we consider the object is an art or not. and YES, house painting is also considered as art. Take Bejing China as an example, a lot of old house are protected since they could tell the lifestlye, history of China.
  • Has Mierle Laderman Ukeles, or Jennifer Lopez, made you think differently about “Women’s Work”? Is “Women’s Work” ever art? If yes, when? If no, why not?
    • I do not think both of them have made me think differently about the concept of women’s work. Women’s work is always considered art to me personally since they have intention and meaning behind it. Just like the old sayings, every action has a reason and meaning and these meaning or reason makes things to become beautiful, important and precious.
  • In class we discussed the woman who cleaned Donald Trump’s Star on Hollywood Blvd. Whose Star would you get down on your hands and knees to clean?
    • If I have to knee down and clean on star on Hollywood, it would be Donal Trump as well. Although a lot of people don’t like him, yet to me his bussiness skill always impressed me.

Remix activity

  • Your thoughts about Copyright: is it working as is? Should it be strengthened, weakened, or modified?
    • Personally I think copyright is working pretty good but there is still a lot of problem with it. In some specific countires such as China, the policy on copyright should be strengthened. Most music is China is totally free for people to downlaod. This situation not only hurts the benefit of the artist but also a disrecpectful to the artist and his team.
  • What license you’ve chosen for your work and why?
    • For my work, I chose CC BY-NC as my license. Because my work is totally non-commercial, and my work is more than welcome that someone can remix on it.
  • Your experience of making your Remix piece. How did you do it? Did it come out as you expected? Were there surprises? Challenges? Insights?
    • When I was doing this project, it was kind of challenge to me. I never did any photoshop before, so It was really tricky to me at first. As I watched trough some video on youtube, I was getting more familiar with the app and finally have my work done. This picture came out pretty good to me, and I personally really like it. It combines my personal image and the image of myself in the virtual world.
  • The freedom & fear, the empowerment & risks, of Internet Culture.
    • Since the technology is getting more and more advanced thesedays, most people chose to share their thoughts on internet which brings us a topic of freedom of internet culture. Relatively , Internet world has more freedom than the actual world we live in. People can say whatever they want on internet since no one can really track them. Which leads to a circumstances that there is cyberbullying happens. Cyberbullying makes people fear of the internet, because ofcourse no one would like something that would potentially hurt you. Yes, here are some of my thoughs of the internet culture.

Besides, this art can also sends out a message of all of us should say a sorry to the environment due to the population we created this far.

Suatainable Art

    • The night before I worked on this project, I drank three bottles of wine just to kill time. And after that, I was like why not using these three bottles to make an art? These art piece is very simple by putting bottles together. And when I was doing it, some alcohol accidentally leaked which surprisingly look good on the whole image.

    • depends on the situation, but most of time should last more than 30 years.
  • How long should a human life last?
    • I wish everyone life can last 90 years.
  • Does the fact that some things, like ephemeral artworks and human lives, have a finite time and then are gone make a difference in the way we experience them?
    • Not really, personally thinking, I believe that the main point of art is to express the idea that the artist put. It does not matter how long it lasts, as long as it express the idea.
  • Should other things, like clean water, air, and land be sustainable and long lasting?
    • I really wish clean water, air and land can be long lasting then we don’t need to worry about out environment anymore.
  • Can one person, like you, make a difference in a global problem like Climate Change?
    • Ofcourse, every one in the world can make the earth better by avoid using plastic bag, use recyclable sources as much as possible.

My Virtual Art Gallery

These three pictures are all some images from my island in Animal Crossing. However, each of them are created by different people. For the first picture, its a picnic area. This area is designed by my girlfriend Coco. She said that every island need a picnic area where people can sit and chill there, So she created an picnic area in my island. The picnic area is very pinky since my girlfriend loves pink a lot. All the combination with different types of pink brings us a feeling of chillness.

For the second picture, It is a place where you can sit and have a tea. This place is designed by one of my friends – Steven. He believes that every island need a place where you can sit and talk with your bussiness partner while you guys are making a deal in market. Therefore, he came up with a place named ” negotiation place ” where you can sit there and have a tea. He used bamboo tree to express a feeling of China style.

For the last picture, it is my home in my island. This is my house in animal crossing. I plant a lot of flowers in front of my house due to the belief of florwers can bring you luckiness. I used yellow flowers and some white flower to create an image of happiness.

The theme of this gallery: Art can be anywhere, even in your games. Animal crossing allow you to create some art of it, such as making clothes, decorating your island and so on. This goal of this gallery is to stress out the idea of you can see art anywhere and make art anywhere.

  • Are Authenticity and Performance opposites? Or can they exist together? Explain!
    • They can definitely exist together, you can presenting some idea or thoughts in a way of being real. Just don’t exaggerate the fact.
  • Below are 2 clips of Jennifer Aniston on the Jimmy Kimmel show – one in the studio and one from home during the coronavirus pandemic. Do you think either clip is more authentic? Is either more performative? Why or why not?
    • I think Jennifer Aniston on the Jimmy Kimmel show is more a performance than authentic since she is on the stage and she must be expected to perform well on the stage.

Drawing(Automatic)

Drawing the map of our campus is harder than what I expected, I just can’t remember where all the structures located. Although I have spent about 2 years studying in CSULB, yet I just can’t remember all the structures. And for some particular structures, I know where they are when I acutally on the campus, but if I told to draw the location out, I just cant do it. For the second experience, I found it very interesting. Cooperation with my partner is harder than I expected, because we sitting on the opposite side, the direction is hard to control.

At the end of the day, I am not satisfied with both of my works, the map was terrible, and the automatic drawing was terrible as well.

Just like her succulents, they are drought resistant which means they can grow without any hydration. So she was kind of take her plants as a motivation to keep being strong in a new environment.

When I was watching her interview, I felt like there was so many connections between me and her. I am also a international student who left my home country- China at a young age.
